VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED The Laboratories for Fundamental Research invite you to volunteer to participate in an exciting experiment to explore how your nervous system can automatically predict the future. With medically approved equipment, we monitor the properties of your skin at your fingertips. Our skin sometimes reflects our emotional state. That is, if you are a little nervous or you are suddenly surprised, your hands become a bit damp. Our sensitive equipment can sense that change long before it is obvious to you. The total time commitment is about an hour, but the experiment itself takes approximately 20 minutes. Initially you will hear a complete description of the experiment and read and approve a consent form. Then, after we have attached the skin monitoring equipment and earphones, we will monitor your skin properties during the session. From time to time on a random basis you will hear about 10 very loud bursts of 1-second long white noise (similar to the sound of the sea surf). At the end, we will show you the results and provide a plot of the data. This experiment is very important because it is showing us that our nervous system can correctly anticipate the startling sound—even before the system has randomly decided whether to present the sound. This appears to be physiological evidence of precognition—peeking slightly into the future. Should you chose to participate, and you live in the West Los Angeles area, please contact James Spottiswoode at james@lfr.org <mailto:james@lfr.org>. If you live in the San Francisco Bay area, please contact Edwin May at may@lfr.org <mailto:may@lfr.org>.
